Turkey Shoot
Required:Rubber Dart Gun That Shoots Several Darts(Can Be Purchased at Wal-Mart)
Description: Great Mens Activity
I purchased a dart gun from Walmart that had a cartridge you loaded with 4 darts.
I think they cost around $3.00. I took 3 empty 2 liter soda bottles and placed
pictures of animals on the front of them. At Thanksgiving I would place pictures
of Turkeys and we'd have a "Turkey Shoot". We had hunting trips for rabbit, squirrels,
deer etc. I then would place the bottles on a bedside table towards the very back
(they fell off better). The bedside table worked great because I could set the height
for those standing to shoot or those sitting, in wheel chairs Plus I could wheel the
table to the resident. The group of residents would take turns trying to shoot and knock
the bottles down. They got to use all 4 darts to try. What the men loved about this was
you actually cocked the gun like a real one. I kept score of who our best hunter was
and they received a prize and a ribbon. I also placed an award on our bulletin board
telling who our hunter of the week was which they also received.
Bird, Beast, or Fish
You have to think fast for this game.
Everyone sits facing the leader. The leader points to one of the players
and says either "BIRD," "BEAST," or "FISH." The chosen player must come
up with the name of an animal that fits the category before the leader counts to ten.
No repeating! If the player does not respond in time, they are out. The game
continues until only one player remains. As you can guess, after a few rounds
it can be hard to think of an animal that has not already been mentioned!
Corn Pitching
You will need a good sized bowl and 6 kernels of corn (the kind used in bird
feeders works better than popcorn). Each player takes turns pitching the corn
kernels, one at a time, into the bowl from a set distance. Keep score of how
many kernels end up in the bowl. The winner is the one with the highest score
after three rounds.
Cranberry Stringing
Wear old clothes for this one -- cranberries can stain.
Each player will need a needle threaded with an 18-inch length of strong thread.
Put a large knot at the end of the thread. Everyone sits around a bowl of cranberries.
On the signal, everyone starts stringing the cranberries onto their threads. The first
to fill the thread is the winner. You might want to try the game alternating popcorn
and cranberries. Hang the completed cranberry strings outside as a treat for the birds.
Thanksgiving Collage Materails Needed: Paper Plate
Magazines
Glue
Page through magazines; find and cut out pictures of your
favorite Thanksgiving foods. Glue them an your paper plate. Simple as that!
For a little variation, you can use markers, crayons, or
paint to decorate your paper plate to look like 'fine china'
before you glue on your pictures of food.
You Can Also Put have residents put pictures of things they find
in magazines that they are thankful for. Line your halls to
the dining room. With the thanksgiving plates your residents made.
Thanksgiving Place Mat
Construction Paper
Glue
Magazines
Clear Contact Paper
Cut a large cornucopia (cone-like) shape out of brown construction paper
(figure 1). Cut a large cirle out of a different shade of brown paper
or use yellow or orange (figure 2). You want to circle big enough to
glue over the end of the cone (where I have the arrows in figure 1).
Glue your cornucopia shape onto the left hand side of a large piece of
paper (either white or a contrasting color). This will be the base
for your placemat. Glue the circle shape onto the paper covering the
end of your cornucoppia as shown below.
Now page through magazines and find
pictures of food! A traditional cornucopia is filled with fruits
and vegetables that you harvest. Since this is your creation, you
can also fill it with whatever foods you like! Cut the pictures of
food out of magazines and glue them into the circle of your cornucopia.
You can also have them "spilling" out of the right side onto the paper.
Once you have all your food glued into your cornucopia and the glue is
dried, cover both sides of your new placemat with clear contact paper.
It will last for many meals to come!
